Frequently Asked Questions
What are the types of sex toys for vulvas?
With so many types of sex toys out there, it can be overwhelming to know what they all mean! Let’s break it all down into simple categories:
Clitoral/External
Clitoral or external toys stimulate the vulva externally by targeting the clitoris to enhance your pleasure. These toys offer a variety of features – vibrating, pulsing, sucking, and licking – and sensations range from gentle and subtle to intense and direct. Here’s a few popular styles:
- Classic Vibrators: offer simplicity and adjustable vibration intensities and patterns – bullet vibrators and wand massagers are amongst the most popular, but there are plenty of variations.
- Clitoral Suction or Air Pressure Toys: feature an opening that cups around the clitoris and uses gentle suction or air pulses, pleasuring the clitoris without direct contact – popular versions of these include the rose toy and Womanizer toys.
G-Spot/Internal
G-spot or internal toys target the g-spot, an erogenous zone that can heighten pleasure when stimulated. They can do things like vibrate, thrust, or apply pressure, offering sensations that range from gentle to deeply intense. Popular styles include:
- G-Spot Massagers or Dildos: feature a shaft with a head designed to target the g-spot. They often feature a curved shaft or head to hit the spot just right. Many massagers feature vibration options, but if you’re not interested in vibration, we recommend exploring silicone dildos.
- Wearable Toys: while there's a big variety of wearable toys out there, there are plenty designed for hands-free g-spot pleasure. Some toys vibrate while others don’t – the G-Squeeze by Squarepeg Toys is one our most popular non-vibrating vaginal toys that fulfills that feeling of fullness many crave. Another popular option is the Lush 4 by Lovense, an app-controlled toy with plenty of powerful vibration options.
- Thrusting Toys: feature self-thrusting intensity and pattern options so you don’t have to do much work or make decisions. Some are handheld while others feature a suction cup to mount on walls, bathtubs, or any other smooth surface. Some feature vibration options to top it all off!
G-Spot & Clitoral (a.k.a. Dual Stimulation)
Dual Stimulation toys are designed to stimulate the g-spot and clitoris simultaneously, and they can range widely in features! Popular styles include:
- Rabbit Toys: feature an insertable shaft and an external stimulator that rubs the clit. Rabbit toys offer a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and features (curved shafts, vibration, self-thrusting, etc.).
- Wearable Toys: while these toys are expansive in what they can do, some of our most popular toys offer simultaneous internal and external stimulation. For example, the Flexer by Lovense has an insertable shaft that mimics the classic “come hither” motion to stimulate the g-spot and an external vibrator that rests against the clitoris – it can even be controlled over long-distances with an app!
How do I choose a sex toy?
One of the most important things to consider when deciding on a new toy is what you know you already like! For example:
- Do you like oral? If so, do you prefer sucking or licking?
- If you already have a sex toy, what do you like or not like about it?
- If you like penetration, do you have a preference for a certain thickness, length, or amount of motion?
- What do you like to do when you’re pleasuring yourself alone?
- If you’re totally new to toys or sex in general, what do you find yourself fantasizing about? What is drawing you to trying out a new toy? If you don't really know what your fantasies are yet, pick up an erotic book and discover what gets you going.
Once you've pinpointed what you're into, read through the question we answered above to get an idea of what’s out there. For beginners, we typically recommend toys that are simpler so you can take your time paying attention to what feels good. For many, rabbit toys or bullet vibrators are their first toys, but there’s no one perfect option because everyone has their own preferences!
We recommend perusing all of our vibrator options, and if you have any questions or need guidance, feel free to reach out to us.
Are there masculine sex toys?
Of course! There's plenty. Here’s a few of the most popular types:
- Strokers/Masturbators: the most popular versions feature suction and a sleeve made of soft, squishy material that envelops the head and shaft. Some include textured sleeves, vibration, and even heating functions!
- Cock Rings: stretchy rings designed to wrap around the shaft, the base of the shaft, and/or the balls, enhancing sensitivity and size. Check out our guide on cock rings to dig more into all the joys of cock rings! For those interested in toys designed for the balls, explore ball stretchers/slings designed to wrap around the balls and pull on them for pain, pleasure, or both.
- P-spot Toys: designed to pleasure the p-spot internally and/or externally. Some vibrate while others don’t, and there are even toys that can be controlled with an app! Many prostate toys feature a curve that targets the p-spot.
While there’s plenty to explore in this list, the diversity of masculine toys is seemingly endless – browse our whole selection here.
How do I clean a sex toy?
How to clean an adult toy is dependent on the toy, but as a general rule of thumb, we recommend washing with warm water and gentle soap. Using a sex toy soap is preferred because they are body-safe and gentle on all toy materials while also deeply cleaning all bacteria.
If the toy is fully waterproof, you can submerge the toy completely in water and lather with soap. Leave out to dry or pat dry with a clean, soft towel.
For non-waterproof or water-resistant toys, dampen a soft washcloth with warm water and lather the toy with soap. Rinse thoroughly with a clean, wet washcloth. Leave out to dry or pat dry with a clean, soft towel.
